Plans Submitted for an Extension Which Will Transform Milloms GP Surgery

Plans have been submitted for an extension to the Waterloo House GP Surgery in Millom to make it an integrated health hub. This follows the successful relocation of the GP practice into the community hospital earlier this year.

Plans for the extension include:

    • An additional four treatment rooms for GP’s

    • An improved reception and waiting area

    • A resource and learning space where GP’s can deliver student and junior doctor training

    • Updated ambulance office accommodation and facilities for the North West

Ambulance staff and vehicle to support a truly incorporated health response team

    • Additional parking at the front of the buildingImproved disabled access and facilities

Alison Redshaw, Practice Manager at Waterloo House GP Surgery, said: “We are extremely pleased that the plans have been submitted for the GP surgery extension. The developments will mean that our GPs and practice team will have access to more space to deliver care to our patients.”

“I would like to say a big thank you to the practice team for their patience and continuously providing a full service to the community in the limited space available. Once plans have been approved the new extension will benefit everyone in the community.”

The extension plans have been submitted to Copeland Borough Council for planning
approval. The next steps include appointing a contractor through a procurement process witha view for work to begin in 2017.

Jenny Brumby, Millom Health Action Group, said: “The Millom Health Action Group are elated the GP surgery extension plan has now gone to the planning board. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Millom Alliance for including the community group in the planning of the new surgery. We look forward to the work starting in 2017.”

The planned developments to the GP surgery will improve patient safety and reduce congestion due to the increase in space available for assessments and in the waiting room area.

Dr Paul Grout, Deputy Medical Director, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is going to be an amazing, new, purpose-built facility for the people of Millom, which will bring them into line with modern GP practices.”

The funding for the GP surgery extension has been earmarked from the primary care infrastructure funds following the submission of a business case developed by the Millom Alliance in early 2015 to NHS England. The funds are awaiting final approval by the Department of Health.

Dr John Howarth, Director of Service Improvement and Interim Deputy CEO at Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Although we are still waiting for final approval for the funds to be released, seeing the plans for the extension being submitted is another step on the journey to improving the health and wellbeing locally in Millom. It’s great to see all the work we are doing jointly with partners and the community coming to fruition.”

The plans for the GP surgery extension will be on display at Waterloo House GP Practice and Millom Network Centre.
